Marvel’s underdog crew, the Thunderbolts, appears set to take on an unexpected, pivotal role in Avengers: Doomsday, adding fresh intrigue to the highly anticipated film. The once-doubted Thunderbolts team — a crew of misfits previously dubbed the “least anticipated” lineup by fans and critics — is reportedly poised to become central to the Avengers’ narrative in a way that could forever alter the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Recent hints from noted insider MTTSH suggest these characters might not only help form a new roster of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes but also spearhead a government-supported team following (or even during) Avengers: Secret Wars.

This bold twist isn’t merely Marvel recycling ideas but appears a strategic move, perhaps aligning with the more somber tone recently adopted by the franchise. Although there’s no confirmation that these Thunderbolts will permanently replace iconic heroes like Iron Man and Captain America, they seem ready to initiate a fresh era, especially with the looming battles and alliances expected in Secret Wars.

Marvel’s production schedule is equally intense, with the UK pegged as the main filming location for Secret Wars starting March 2026. This substantial timeline allows cast members the flexibility to juggle other projects, with Doomsday already set for filming from March to August 2025. Concurrently, Spider-Man is swinging back into action with his fourth installment filming between May and October, suggesting we might see Peter Parker’s story weave into the complex Avengers narrative again.

Interestingly, Doomsday and Secret Wars will not shoot consecutively, as previously speculated. The Russo brothers recently clarified during NYCC that, unlike the mere four-week break between Infinity War and Endgame, there’ll be a more considerable gap between Doomsday and Secret Wars, giving both films a separate, yet cohesive development process. Joe Russo noted that they’re excited to be back with Marvel to push storytelling boundaries, hoping to dive deeper into character arcs and new plot terrains, promising both unpredictability and depth.

Adding fuel to the fan theories, Sebastian Stan, who stars in Thunderbolts, recently alluded to a change of pace in his Marvel journey, coyly mentioning his “regrets” as the Winter Soldier and hinting at a possible crossover into DCU territory. Alongside, Daniel Brühl, who portrays Baron Zemo, has been equally cryptic, neither confirming nor denying a potential return, teasing fans to expect more from Marvel’s morally ambiguous side.

With Avengers: Doomsday hitting theaters on May 1, 2026, and Secret Wars on May 7, 2027, this Marvel phase seems set to shake up its heroic landscape more than ever. For long-time fans, the team shakeups and narrative choices could either bring a refreshing change or tread risky waters.
